Pastors at St. Peters

Pastor Larry Zessin

Pastor Larry I. Zessin was born in Chicago on October 24, 1940 to Irene and Irvin Zessin. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Sturgeon Bay. He attended schools in the area and was confirmed by Pastor Theophil Baganz on June 6, 1954 at St. Peters Lutheran Church. In 1954 he attended Northwestern Preparatory School in Watertown, Wisconsin to study in high school for the pastoral ministry. He graduated from Northwestern College in 1962. He attended Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin and graduated in 1965. He served as a vicar for the District Mission Board and started the mission Our Savior Lutheran Church of Grafton, Wisconsin.

After his graduation he was called to serve Goodview Trinity Lutheran Church of Winona, Minnesota and First Lutheran Church of Minnesota City, Minnesota. In 1972 he accepted the call to serve at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Menomonee, Wisconsin and as campus pastor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. In 1985 he was called to serve as a missionary in the West Indies. In 1987 he accepted the call to serve Grace Lutheran Church of Oshkosh, Wisconsin where he served until accepting the call to St. Peters in 1997.

He has served on the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod nationally on the Campus Ministry Committee and Lutheran Pioneers. He has also served on the Western Wisconsin District Evangelism Committee and Stewardship Committee as well as district chaplain for the Pioneer program. He is currently Circuit Pastor for the Northeastern Circuit of the Northern Wisconsin District. Pastor Zessin has served as Senior Pastor at St. Peters since January of 1998.

Pastor Zessin met his wife Dolores while attending school in Watertown, Wisconsin. They were married in 1963 in Watertown by Pastor Baganz. Dolores is a nurse. They have three adult children, Natalie Pratt living in Oshkosh, Michael, also of Oshkosh and Beth of Port Orange, Florida. Pastor also is a grandfather to six beautiful grandchildren. He will be happy to show you their pictures. He enjoys outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. Dolores enjoys outdoor photography. They are both cross-county skiers.

Pastor Darrick Kolterjahn

Oshkosh was Pastor Kolterjahn's home for his formative years. Like his own children here at St. Peters, he attended a parochial school at Grace Lutheran because his parents felt strongly about the importance of being raised in a school that teaches the Word of God. He also had the blessing of a loving family and fully appreciates the strength and support families can provide.
It was during his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that he came face to face with a family crisis that allowed him to reevaluate his priorities. Darrick Kolterjahn realized at that point that his mission in life was to help others. Determined to follow that desire to help others, he was soon enrolled in Northwestern College in Watertown, Wisconsin and became a pastor.

While he was in Watertown he met, "an incredible woman" that he would marry in 1971. He says, "It has been a tremendous blessing to have Barb as my partner through life."

After graduating from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Pastor Kolterjahn received a call to a dual parish. He pastored St. Paul Lutheran in Naper, Nebraska and Zion Lutheran at Bonesteel, South Dakota. Fortunately they are not as far apart as it sounds, and it was a wonderful training ground for an inexperienced young Pastor. He had the joy of serving the dual parish for ten years.
In 1985 He received a call to a mission church in Holidaysburg, Pennsylvania, which also proved to be a wonderful experience. He and Barbara enjoyed the area immensely. It was in 1994 that he received a call from St. Peters and was led by the Lord to accept the call.

Pastor Kolterjahn says, "Eight years later I still marvel at the blessing the Lord has bestowed on us. Barb and I have 8 children ranging from a college graduate to a seventh grader and have been trusted by the Lord to take care of Emily, an adult who has Downs Syndrome."

The Kolterjahns have recently been blessed with a grandchild, and are enjoying their new role as grandparents. Truly the Lord has shown them His mercy and love in their lives.

" All things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28
